What is the difference between dual sport bikes and touring motorcycles?
Both adventure motorcycles (or dual sport) and touring motorcycles are designed for long rides, but they meet different requirements depending on the type of terrain and comfort. Adventure motorcycles, also known as ADV (Adventure), are designed for mixed on-road and off-road use. They allow riders to travel on paved roads while also exploring unpaved roads, bumpy trails, and off-road paths. In contrast, touring motorcycles are exclusively designed for on-road use and provide optimal comfort for long rides, often with a passenger and bulky luggage.
In terms of vehicle design, adventure bikes have a high seat height, which allows for greater suspension travel and an upright, high riding position for good visibility and better control off-road. They are equipped with long-travel suspensions for shock absorption and spoked wheels (21 inches front, 18 inches rear) that are suitable for uneven terrain. Touring motorcycles, on the other hand, offer a wide and low seat for more comfort, a more relaxed riding position, and lower suspensions that promote stability on the road. They are also heavier due to their imposing fairings and numerous comfort features.
As for performance, adventure motorcycles have a wider engine selection ranging from 500 to 1300 cm³ and prefer good torque to adapt to difficult conditions. They are typically equipped with a chain drive, which is better suited for rough terrain. Their tank often has a large capacity (20 l or more) to provide good autonomy off-road. In comparison, touring motorcycles have more powerful engines with large displacement (1000 to 2000 cc), optimized for smooth and pleasant road performance. They often feature a lower-maintenance transmission with a shaft or belt and very large tanks (25 l or more) to ensure maximum range on the highway.
The equipment and protection also differ between the two types of motorcycles. Adventure motorcycles have a more minimalist fairing, but are equipped with an adjustable windscreen, engine protection, and crash bars to withstand falls and impacts in the terrain. They also feature a simpler dashboard and limited electronics to maintain their reliability off-road. Touring motorcycles, on the other hand, are equipped with enclosing fairings, large windscreens, an audio system, heated seats, and advanced electronics that include riding aids such as cruise control, advanced ABS, and adaptive suspensions.
In short, adventure motorcycles are ideal for travelers who want to explore diverse roads, as they combine versatility and robustness, while touring motorcycles are designed for long road trips and emphasize comfort, stability, and high-quality equipment. The choice between these two types therefore depends on the travel style and preferences of the motorcycle rider.
